Black Streaking on Asphalt Roofs
August 8, 2016 | Filed under: News
We’ve all seen it. The unsightly black stains and dark streaking on asphalt roofs. Nothing is more frustrating that seeing your new roof develop these stains and streaks within only a short time of being installed. These stains take away from the appeal and appearance of your home and can affect resale value.
What exactly causes these stains and streaking?
At first glance, these black stains can appear to be some sort of dirt buildup. This is, however, not the case. The dark stains and streaks that you see on an asphalt roof is actually a form of algae-like bacteria called Gloeocapsa Magma. The bacteria that grows on asphalt shingles is not known to harm the integrity of the shingles and is not a health hazard. This bacteria feeds on the limestone filler that is a component of your shingle. Congrats, your roof is “algae” food.
